VERSA + LEO LAGUE

DEVICES FOR CONNECTION

Milano Design Week 2026

Introduction

Devices for Connection

Devices for Connection is the concept developed by designer Leo Lague and creative platform VERSA in collaboration for Milan Design Week 2026. The project will take place from April 20 to 26 within the Alcova circuit, at Chiesa di San Martino, which will be opened to the public for the first time through the installation. Emerging from an ongoing dialogue between matter and spirituality, light, sound, and form operate together to shift the experience of space.

“As we discussed the spaces for this year, we came across Chiesa di San Martino, which connects directly with our ongoing research into the expansion of consciousness and forms of contemporary spirituality, as well as with Leo’s work,” says Gabriel Brugnara, creative director and founder of VERSA.

“The installation in the church is the result of an ongoing collaboration between my practice, VERSA, and Alcova. This is the third consecutive year we have conceived immersive experiences together, and this year that exchange has taken shape within Chiesa di San Martino, a space that until now had never been opened to the general public,” says Leo Lague.

Leo Lague presents a new body of work developed over two years of research in collaboration with Brazilian researchers, communities, and artisans. Materials such as primitive silk, natural latex, gold leaf, and aluminum are removed from their conventional contexts and activated as sensitive surfaces, responsive to light, temperature, and proximity. Together, they form a kind of material cosmology, in which each element operates within a larger system, alluding to the cosmos. suggesting something almost stellar.

The installation in Milan marks the beginning of a new cycle of projects for VERSA, structured around the creation of spaces for presence, connection, and the expansion of consciousness. Throughout 2026, this investigation unfolds through a calendar of activations that consolidates a practice centered on creative healing. In this context, VERSA presents VERSA Vision internationally for the first time — a platform for original collaborations that brings together different creative languages and sensibilities. Conceived with a 360-degree approach, experiences become devices — physical, editorial, and sensory. One of them is Almanac, VERSA’s first publication, launched as part of the installation. Conceived as a collectible object, the project brings together creatives from the global avant-garde and explores reflections about creativity and the expansion of consciousness.

Within the interval – between form and instability, between matter and perception – emerges an approach with that which we understand to be the sacred. Not only seen as a representation or symbol, but a direct, felt experience: a state of heightened presence forged through a sensitive engagement with space, material, and the body itself.

The setting itself extends this line of thought. The intentional choice of a church as the site for the exhibition brings forth ideas about reflection, contemplation, and gathering. . The design guides the visitor's focus inward — toward the heart of the space and toward the self — fostering both introspection and an encounter with the whole. Central to the space, an LED plane pulses with light, establishing rhythm and modulation anchored in the logic of breath. This screen introduces a temporal structure that invites the body to integrate itself with the surrounding environment. The continuous soundtrack provides the base frequency that orders the entire experience.

about the venue

The church is situated within the former Baggio Military Hospital complex, a historic site that blends architecture and nature across buildings of various periods and typologies. As the complex's centerpiece, the church boasts a neoclassical façade, interiors finished with marble and wood, and detailed frescoes. It served as a spiritual focal point for the complex's former occupants and remains a consecrated space in active use today. This current status made developing the experience particularly challenging, requiring extensive approvals and collaboration among all stakeholders. Historically, access was restricted, but for the 2026 edition, it will be opened to the general public for the very first time.

About the authors

VERSA and Leo Lague have been partners collaborating since 2024. Their joint projects include the installation Silver Dreams (2024) presented in partnership with Micasa at Casa Massetti, a work by Paulo Mendes da Rocha. They also collaborated with the curatorial platform Alcova on a project for Art Basel Miami 2024, as well as in the installation Time After Time for Milan Design Week 2025. Beyond these installations, their partnership extends to Leo Lague’s personal brand and projects for Casiere, a global design collection managed by Leo and based in southern Brazil.

VERSA signs the project's 360-degree vision, overseeing concept development, visual identity, exhibition design, editorial content, and expanded collaborations. Seeking to expand the reflection around presence, VERSA also developed original materials designed to welcome the public and offer greater depth, exploring spaces of creative healing.

Under this vision, Almanac emerged – a collectible publication launched as part of the experience, exploring creativity and the expansion of consciousness. At the heart of the volume, 21 Questions were posed to a curated group of global avant-garde creatives, who share their unique perspectives on consciousness, creativity, and culture. These same questions will be distributed to the public as a set of cards, designed to prompt moments of meaningful connection within the experience. The Almanac will be displayed on exhibition tables near the event entrance for consultation and will also be available for purchase.

About

VERSA is a Brazilian hybrid organization of architects, curators, and designers guided by an interconnected vision. At its core, it explores the concept of places for creative healing, seeking connections that expand consciousness and creativity through experiences, consulting, publications, and special projects.

VERSA emerged in 2019 as an experimental laboratory within São Paulo’s creative underground. In 2022, it expanded into brand projects across Brazil and, in 2024, onto the global stage. Today, it presents proprietary annual projects in São Paulo and during Milan Design Week, alongside collaborations around the world. Its headquarters welcomes collaborators and clients throughout the year and is situated where the Atlantic Forest meets the ocean, on São Paulo’s northern coast.

The living expression of VERSA’s work is its 360 platform, which brings together design, music, art, and knowledge in a multisensory editorial experience that convenes the forefront of Brazilian creativity for reflection, celebration, and transformation. In 2025, it took place at the São Paulo Biennial Pavilion, bringing together 118 creatives and 11 sponsoring brands, including some of the most influential names in the industry.

Collaboration is one of the organization’s fundamental principles. VERSA believes that the meeting of creative minds is key to authentic and expansive creation, and often develops projects that unfold from this premise. This is the case with its proposal for Milan in 2026, for which VERSA also leads the curation of expanded collaborations.

Gleeson Paulino is a Brazilian photographer. Drawing from journeys through different regions of Brazil, he constructs a sensorial vision of the country as a territory of diversity, hope, and longing, marked by intense colors and refined juxtapositions. Widely recognized in the fashion world, he has collaborated with publications such as Vogue, Elle, and Marie Claire. Paulino created the visual content for the installation’s LED screen.

Cauana

Cauana is a Brazilian music selector and producer. Through her practice as a DJ, she brings a singular sensibility to sets that lead listeners through deep and compelling experiences. Having performed at Dekmantel Amsterdam, she is regarded as one of the leading figures in Brazil’s electronic music avant-garde. She moves fluidly across a wide range of sonic influences, making her work rhythmically unpredictable and consistently surprising in its paths and layers. She created the soundtrack for the installation.

LEO LAGUE

Instagram

Raised between natural landscapes and the coal industry in southern Brazil, his design practice explores tensions between opposites: time and space, the artisanal and the industrial, the secular and the sacred, reality and fiction.

In recent years, Lague has gained international recognition. Elle Decor Italia named him one of four emerging talents in global design. He presented Silver Dreams at Casa Masetti, exhibited his work at Design Miami 2024 through the platform Alcova, participated in Ricardo Gaioso’s Piloto Project at Fuorisalone 2024, and was included in the Forbes Under 30 list in 2024.

The designer’s new body of work, to be presented for the first time in the installation, investigates Brazilian organic materials, considering their production processes, supply chains, and material behavior over time. The research is based on the understanding of material not only as a technical resource, but as a carrier of specific cultural, productive, and aesthetic systems, often marginalized or undervalued by contemporary industrial logic.

By articulating organic materials with rigorous formal systems, the work explores the continuity of ancestral knowledge, craft practices, and ways of connecting with the land — repositioning them within a contemporary, future-oriented context.

ABOUT THE NEW PIECES

Armchair | Warmlock

Image: Leo Lague

Constructed with a geometric, box-shaped base made of matte-finish aluminum. The continuous seat and backrest are upholstered in a long-pile shaggy texture made from Brazilian primitive silk in a natural beige tone.

This silk is obtained through a non-industrialized process in which cocoons are collected without interrupting the insect’s life cycle, resulting in irregular and discontinuous threads. This method produces a material that resists industrial standardization, varying in density, resistance, and appearance. In the project, the silk is applied without rigid tension, allowing its physical properties — weight, flexibility, and responsiveness to gravity — to remain active within both the design and the conceptual framework.

Stool and Coffee Table | Aeon

Image: Leo Lague

Rounded, continuous volumes emerge from a solid core, later coated with layers of foam and fiberglass and entirely covered in hand-applied gold leaf. Between density and suspension, the pieces exist in a state of constant ambiguity: they appear light, yet assert their weight; they seem precious, yet resist absolute polish. Perfect in their imperfection, they evoke relics forged by hand in a distant era — silent amulets suspended in time, inhabiting the space between the primal mineral and the sacred.

The gold is applied by specialists in the restoration of religious iconography. The design reflects the tension between value and materiality, subverting the traditional perception of gold by altering its surface — wearing it down, destabilizing its perfection, and transforming it into something rawer and less familiar.

Chaise | Vestígio

Image: Leo Lague

Defined by extrusions arranged in a continuous, silent rhythm, the piece articulates a geometry that feels like the materialization of an ancestral echo. Rather than emerging from sterile surfaces, it is born of accumulation: successive layers of acrylic paste and dark paint washes rest upon wood like dust settling over a myth.

The finish is not a final veil, but the very memory of the gesture — a tactile record of time and repetition. The darkened surface, rich in depth and organic variation, transforms the precise calculation of form into an apparition. The piece presents itself as a dormant trace, where logical structure and the melancholy of an ancient fable converge.

Chaise | Vestígio

Vertical floor lamp with an elongated elliptical cupola constructed from a steel grid framework, enveloped in a translucent, pale-yellow latex tapestry.

The latex utilized in this piece derives from the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) and is manually extracted by communities in the Amazon through practices that preserve both the tree and the surrounding ecosystem. Leo’s approach engages with the material through collaboration with local communities, shifting the narrative from extraction to reciprocity. The combination of organic latex and the geometric precision of metal structures creates a dialogue between past and present, nature and intervention.

The lighting of the installation is designed by the French brand DCW Éditions, which presents itself as a producer of discreet yet essential objects that touch everyday life — and therefore must be impeccable. In a symmetrical arrangement, in harmony with the space, 20 Vision 20.20 floor lamps will define the atmosphere.

“We chose this model for its elegant and understated design, which allows for dimming and subtle light accents, fully aligned with the tone we intended for the project,” says Gabriel Brugnara, creative director.

The olfactory signature of the installation is signed by the British house Vyrao, which merges perfumery and neuroscience. Its fragrances combine perfumery, natural ingredients, and neuroscience to influence emotions and well-being. Founded by Yasmin Sewell, the brand positions joy as a form of luxury and embraces multisensory rituals — affirmations, design, and scent — to amplify emotional states.

The fragrance selected for the space is Magnetic 70. Woody and awakening, it brings together notes of vetiver for grounding, cedarwood for positivity, frankincense for illumination, and angelica seed for protection. Made predominantly with natural ingredients, it is cruelty-free, and its 50 ml bottles contain an energized Herkimer diamond crystal, activated by Louise Mita.
